Subject: Campaign in bid to free Leeds pub from grip of Tesco
Wed Aug 10, 2011 7:45 am
A last ditch attempt has been made to save an iconic Victorian pub from being turned into a supermarket.
The Queen, in Burley Road, Leeds, has been the subject of four planning applications to turn it into a Tesco.
But Coun Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) wants Leeds City Council to consider turning the building into a community-owned premises.
She said: “The pub’s become a bit scruffy in recent years but it’s been part of the fabric of the community for a very long time.
“There’s a big danger that the Tesco will take away trade from the high street in Woodsley Road, which has had refurbishment work done recently.”
