THE people of Leeds are being urged to keep calm as cities round the country flared into violence.
Last night community leaders in Chapeltown said the community had stayed strong and peaceful as images poured on to television screens of trouble in other cities.
London has suffered nights of rioting and violence and looting have hit Birmingham, Nottingham and Liverpool.
In Leeds, prominent speakers including councillors and community workers said people from the inner city should be proud of themselves having pulled together.
Yesterday, as a victim of a shooting in Chapeltown lay fighting for his life in hospital, two walks of peace were held to re-assure people and urge them to stay calm and to respect others living close by.
